After an unusually harsh winter, we have been blessed with warmer weather these past few weeks. Today was the warmest day we've had all year...dare I say, it was a wee bit hot! I actually had to turn on the a/c in my car. I took advantage of the nice temperatures and visited the National Arboretum. The trees and flowers are just starting to bloom, and I look forward to going back in a month or so when everything is green and in full bloom.
The most famous landmark of the Arboretum is actually not plant-related, but the original Corinthian columns from the Capitol. They were removed in the 1950s when an expansion was added to the Capitol. At their new home in the Arboretum, it appears as if they are growing out of the grass.
It also feels as if you have stumbled upon ruins of an ancient civilization.
Another interesting aspect of the Arboretum is the bonsai garden. (I have to admit, bonsai always makes me think of The Karate Kid. Admit it, you think the same thing.)
This one was pretty cool. It looks like two trees in one.
I would've stuck around longer, but there were bees everywhere! Why do the bees love bonsai so much?
I visited the perennial garden, hoping to see lots of daffodils and tulips. But apparently it's too early for that. There were only a few daffodil plants.
P.S. Daffodils are my favorite.
I also love these: mini irises!
Seriously, they were about three inches tall.
I think my favorite part was the magnolia grove. I discovered that I really love the smell of magnolias!
I also didn't know there were pink magnolias.
Hopefully I will go back to the Arboretum next month to capture more blooming flowers. Hope y'all enjoyed the lovely spring weekend!
