The hotel where I stayed (the Westin) had a rotating restaurant up on the 78th floor. On our first night in Atlanta, my colleagues and I had cocktails up there while we took in the views of the city.
Turner Field in the distance
A lovely sunset
City lights
As an avid Olympic watcher, I was excited to visit Centennial Olympic Park, built as the centerpiece of the 1996 Summer Olympics. (Another fun fact: Turner Field, the current home of the Atlanta Braves, was also constructed for the Olympics.)
This is the Olympic Rings fountain. They do a light-and-music show several times a day. It's also a good place for kids to cool off on a hot summer day.
These granite columns had the names of all the 1996 Olympic medalists.
The women's gymnastics team. Ahh, I remember it well!
Lastly, we went to the Atlanta History Center. It was quite expansive! I think we spent several hours there, and still didn't see everything. There was a fascinating exhibit on 50 objects that represent the history of Atlanta.
The Olympic torch!!
The Chick-Fil-A cow.
Hank Aaron's bat.
In addition to the main museum, there are three different houses on the property that represent different eras and segments of Atlanta's history.
A farmhouse, complete with farm animals and outbuildings.
A slave cabin.
And this gorgeous 1930's Palladian mansion.
The house had an exhibit on fashion (yay!), with each room dedicated to a different decade.
I always love seeing old-timey kitchens. It's so interesting to see the different tools and appliances that were used back in the day.
The telephone room (or rather, closet).
This is the back yard, as viewed from one of the bedrooms upstairs.
In contrast to the luxurious bedrooms of the residents, this is the servants' quarters.
And I believe this is a call board, just like in Downtown Abbey (albeit more "modern")!
On our last night in Atlanta, we ate at a restaurant near the historic Fox Theater.
And we were right next door to the Georgian Terrace Hotel, where Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable stayed during the premiere of Gone With the Wind.
